Why is it that anomalously successful people often report spending a lot of time alone as kids?

curious as to the actual ‘causal’ link here

I assume it just gives them time to develop a really consistent internal understanding of the world, which (when uncorrelated with that of other people) lets them do unusual things?

Well it’s this or a massive selection bias in parents that decide to homeschool…

Or literally just that schooling/other social systems are entirely negative irrespective of whether alone time is positive.
